It was the Second Annual Speed Networking event, with a new friend!  MAPS - which stands for Muslim Americans in Public Service - joined the staff caucuses for a fun-filled night for those who were tired of the daily schmooze.  It was a great opportunity to meet people you see in the hallways, but never know their name, and learn something new and quirky about them.  And do it with a martini in hand.  I wouldn't speed network any other way.

This post is long overdue!  APICA started 2010 off on a great start - we were thrilled to recognize Acting Lt. Governor Mona Pasquil as APICA 2010's Torchbearer at our kick-off Welcome Back Reception.  She is the first woman and the first API to be Calfornia's Lt. Governor, and the highest ranking API woman in California.  She was awarded APICA's 2010 Torchbearer Award not only for her accomplishments, but also for her commitment to lifting up the community and paving the way for those who follow.  Check out the pictures from the reception below.

APICA members and non-members stepped up to the plate this past summer to provide 40 backpacks for disadvantaged students ranging from grades 1 through 6 at Pacific Elementary School in South Sacramento.  This past Friday, APICA visited the school for an hour to distribute snacks, play games, and most importantly, hand out the backpacks!  The students had a blast, and admittedly, so did we.  This was a great event that we're hoping we can do again next year -- it was a nice moment to step outside the realms of work and the Capitol and help out the community that we live in.
